Lilium catesbaei, Walt. Southern Red Lily. Bulb oblong, 1-2 in. long, 3/4 - l in. wide, composed of a few long, narrow, white scales: st. 1-2 ft. high, slender, smooth: leaves semi-erect or nearly horizontal, 1-3 in. long. 1/3 - 1/2 in. wide: flowers 1-3, 3-4 in. diam., smooth inside, of the same color as those of L. philadelphicum; anthers red. Late June, July. N. C. to Fla. and Ala. —Rather tender and capricious, and in the North best grown in pots. CH
