Eugenia uniflora, Linn., not Berg. (E, Michelii. Lam.). Pitanga. Surinam Cherry. Shrub, 5-20 ft., glabrous: Lvs. ovate-lanceolate, obtuse at base, glossy, 1-2 in. long, exceeding the peduncles: berry ½-1 in. diam., ribbed, resembling a miniature tomato, edible, with a spicy acid flavor. Trop. Brazil. R.H. 1889, p. 532.— Hardy in S. Fla. and in S. Calif. Much esteemed for jellies. Useful also as a pot-plant, producing an abundance of showy red frs. CH
