Vernonia crinita, Raf. (V. arkansana, DC.). St. 8-10 ft. high: lvs. linear-lanceolate, 4-12 in. long, alternate-acuminate, glabrous or somewhat pubescent: peduncles not branched: involucre green, the filiform tips often reddish and the pappus often purplish. Plains, Mo., Kans. to Texas. July-Sept. Var. alba, Hort., has white fls.
