Quercus variabilis, Blume (Q. chinensis, Bunge, not Abel. Q. Bungeana, Forbes. Q. serrata, Carruth., not Thunb.). Tree, to 80 ft.: lvs. slender-petioled, oblong to oblong- lanceolate, acuminate, crenately serrate, with bristle-like teeth, dark green and glabrous above, whitish tomentulose below, 3 1/2-6 in. long: fr. almost sessile; acorn subglobose, not much exceeding the large cup; scales thick, lanceolate, recurved. N. China, Japan. S.I.F. 1:28.—Handsome tree with distinct foliage almost like that of Castanea crenata; has proved hardy in Mass. and W. N. Y.
