Rhamnus frangula, Linn. (Frangula Alnus, Mill.). Shrub or small tree, attaining 12 ft.: lvs. broadly obovate to obovate-oblong, acute, entire, dark green above, glabrous, 1-2 1/2 in. long: fr. red, changing to black, with 2 nutlets. Eu., N. Afr., W. Asia and Siberia, escaped from cult, in some localities in the eastern states. Gng. 8:3. B.B. (ed. .2) 2:504. H.W. 3:48. Var. asplenifolia, Dipp. (R. asplenifolia,, Simonkai, not Carr.). Lvs. linear, undulate; an interesting form of very distinct appearance with its feathery foliage. Var. latifolia, Dipp. (R. latifolia, Kirchn., not L'Her.). Lvs. to 5 in. long and to 2 1/2 in. broad: fr. larger. Var. heterophylla, Mouillef. (var. angustifolia, Bean). Lvs. oblong to lanceolate, uneven, erose or irregularly lobed at the margin.—R. Frangula is a handsome shrub with shining foliage and attractive berries.
