Rhynchostylis retusa, Blume (Saccolabium guttatum, Lindl. S. praemorsum, Lindl. S. Rheedii, Wight. S. retusum. Voigt. S. Blumei, Lindl.). St. stout, with channeled lvs. 6-20 in. long: fls. in dense, cylindrical racemes about as long as the lvs., 3/4in. across, white, blotched with pink or violet. June, July. Trop. India and Malay Isls. B.M. 4108. F.S. 7, p. 92; 14:1463, 1464. B.R. 1443 (as Sarcanthus guttatus). G.C. 1845:364; II.1:219; 23:573; III.15:812. Gn. 31, p. 537. A.G. 20:317. S.H. 2, p. 375.—Several varieties are in the trade. Var. majus, Hort. Larger in all its parts. I.H. 15:545. Gn. 31, p. 69; 36, p. 230 (all as Saccolabium Blumei var. majus). Var. Holdfordiana, Hort., an old form with large racemes of waxy white fls., spotted with crimson, the lip being also crimson. Var. gigantea, Hort., very much like the type. Var. alba, Hort. Fls. entirely white. Var. Dayi and var. superba are offered.
