Cultivation

Zones 8-11. Prefers sun, but can be grown in partial shade. Can be grown in a planter, large pot, or in the ground. It is a slow grower at about 12' a year for the first couple years. Then can grow about 2' per year up to 20' at maturity. Use a regular potting soil like Sea Soil. Even though it is a slow grower it's advisable to cut back in the fall. Cut back one third of plant. In the end it will make for a much bushier plant with lots of flower clusters; otherwise you will have a long vine with some smallish side growth. Though it is reputed to be a twining climber I have found that it needs help to climb. This is an easy evergreen vine to grow in a temperate climate such as Vancouver, Canada. It seems resistant to bugs and disease. It likes a medium wet soil, but will tolerate a drier soil. As far as feeding, a well balanced slow release fertilizer (14-14-14) in spring and once in summer can be used. If you are opposed to this method, you can dig in some well rotted compost in the spring. It is one of the easier vines to grow for the patient gardener. The small clusters of white flowers have a sweet jasmine scent.
