Shrub, to 8 ft.: branchlets strigose: lvs. oblong-ovate to elliptic-lanceolate or lanceolate, acuminate, serrulate or serrate, sparingly strigose or nearly glabrous above, densely strigose below, 3—7 in. long; petiole about 1 in. long: cymes 4-6 in. across; sterile fls. white or sometimes purple, 1- 1 ½  in. across, with broadly oval, entire or serrate sepals; styles 2.
