Opuntia emoryi, Engelm. A prostrate and spreading plant with comparatively large, long-clavate, curved joints and reaching a height of 8-12 in.: joints 4-7 in. long and 1-1½ in. thick, with large, elongated tubercles: areoles remote, with white wool and a few long (½ in.) yellow bristles; spines numerous, exterior 10-20, ½ in. or less long, very bulbous at base; interior 5-10, brownish to reddish black, more or less flattened and sometimes 3 in. long: fls. yellow, reddish within, 1½-2 in. wide: fr. ellipsoidal, yellow, 2-2½ in. long and 1 in. wide, armed with numerous bristles and spines. S. W. U. S., N. Mex.
