Phellodendron Lavallei, Dode. Tree, to 30 or occasionally to 50 ft.: bark corky: 1-year-old branchlets purplish brown: lf.-rachis puberulous or pubescent; lfts. 5-13, elliptic- ovate to oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, cuneate at the base, minutely crenulate and ciliate, dull yellowish green above, pubescent beneath while young, at maturity often only on the veins, 2-4 in. long: infl. puberulous: fr. black, 1/3in. across, in rather loose broad panicles 2 1/2-4 in. across. June. Cent. Japan. I.T. 5:171 (as P. amurense). — Often confused with P. japonicum and cult, under that name. CH
