Iris humilis, M. Bieb. (I. ruthenica, Ker ex parte). Rhizome wide-creeping: lvs. linear, up to 12 in a tuft, glaucous, 6-12 in. long: st. not more than 1-1 ½ in. long, bearing 2 long lvs. immediately below the spathes: spathe 1-fld.; outer segms. with a suborbicular blade and a long cuneate claw, deep blue-purple with deeper veins, whitish on the throat, with deep purple veins; inner segms. oblanceolate, unguiculate, blue-purple. Caucasus to Georgia and Hungary. Gn. 10, p. 379. —Distinguished from I. ruthenica by the 2 long lvs. which arise below the spathe and are 2-3 times as long as the latter.
