Calanthe crotalifera, Wats. Rattlesnake Plant. Leaves oval, abruptly acute at each end, 1½-2 feet long, and 10-12 inches broad, yellowish green, with a white-margined midrib, paler underneath; petiole 2-3 feet long, curved, sheathing: peduncles 1 or 2, 8-10 inches high, bearing distichous yellow-flowered spikes. Guatemala.—Offered in Fla. The spikes suggest the rattle of a rattlesnake (Crotalus) whence the specific name.
