Shrub, to 6 ft.: lvs. membranous, oval or broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, rounded or cordate at the base, serrate, densely grayish pubescent below, 2 ½ -6 in. long: corymbs 2-5 in. across, usually with sterile fls. June, July. B.B. 2:185 (as H. radiata); (ed. 2) 2:231. N. C. to Tenn. and Ala. Var. sterilis, Rehd. All fls. sterile, in dense heads 5-7 in. across; fls. about ½ in. across with oval obtuse sepals.
