Syringa julianae, Schneid. Spreading shrub, to 6 ft.: branchlets villous: lvs. elliptic-ovate, acute or acuminate, cuneate at the base, short-pubescent above, pale and more villous-pubescent beneath, particularly on the veins, 1-2 in. long: infl. 2-4 in. long, rather loose; rachis and pedicels slightly hairy and like the glabrous distinctly toothed calyx purplish violet: corolla lilac-purple outside, fragrant, small, the spreading lobes white inside; anthers violet, inserted a little below the mouth. May, June. W. China. B.M. 8423.—A handsome and distinct species similar to S. pubescens; the deeper color of the fls. is heightened by the purplish violet color of the whole infl. CH
