Millettia caffra, Meissn. Ironwood. A S. African tree, 20-30 ft. high, with very hard close-grained brown wood and dark, rough, rugulose bark: lvs. on channeled petioles 6-8 in. long; lfts. lanceolate-oblong, acute, in 5-6 pairs, 2-2 ½ in. long, 1 in. apart; slender stipules 2-3 lines long: panicle 6-8 in. long: fr. leathery, velvety, used as a medicine by the Kafirs. Intro, into Fla. in 1891.
