Hystrix (Greek, from hustrix, a porcupine). Gramineae. Perennials with simple culms, flat blades and loosely fld. spikes: spikelets 2- 4-fld., nearly sessile, 1-3 together at each joint of a zigzag rachis as in Elymus, widely divergent at maturity; glumes 1 or 2 short awns; lemmas rigid, tapering into a long awn.—Species 4, N. Amer. and Eurasia. H. patula, Moench (Asprella hystrix, Willd.). Bottle-brush Grass is found in E. U. S. and is sometimes used for lawn decoration and for borders. Dept. Agric., Div. Agrost. 20:168.
