Chrysanthemum's are a versatile group of flowers with spectacular flower forms and colors. Suitable varieties can be found for many conditions. Some fancier varieties known as florists Chrysanthemums cannot tolerate cold climates and must be grown indoors, while others are very hardy. The different varieties bloom at different times of the year, and can also be forced to bloom by controlling their environment, enhancing their popularity with florists.

Lemon trees are beautiful, the blossoms smell great, and the fruit are long-lasting and very versatile in the kitchen. The Meyer lemon, actually a cross between a lemon and possibly an orange or a mandarin, was named for Frank N. Meyer who first discovered it in 1908. Thin-skinned and slightly less acidic than the Lisbon and Eureka lemons, Meyer lemons require more care when shipping and are not widely grown on a commercial basis.

Featured Article: Frangipani - Plumeria

Plumeria blooms

Plumeria (common name Frangipani; syn. Himatanthus Willd. ex Roem. & Schult.) is a small genus of 7-8 handsome and useful species native to tropical and subtropical Americas. Open plants have leathery, pointed leaves at the ends of the branches. Flowers during warm seasons, and give clusters of large, showy, waxy flowers with a strong perfume. Plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess poisonous, milky sap, rather similar to that of Euphorbia.

Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.
