Clematis Vitalba, Linn. In England called Traveler's Joy. The most vigorous climber of the genus, ascending 20-30 ft.: lvs. pinnate; lfts. ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, cordate at the base, partly cut, 2-3½ in. long: fls. numerous, in axillary panicles, dull white, ¾in. across, with a faint odor of almonds: styles of fr. long and feathery, from which it is given the name "old man's beard."
