Piptanthus tomentosus, Franch. Slender shrub 3-7 ft. tall: young branches tomentose, brownish glabrescent with age: lfts. ovate to ovate-lanceolate, before flowering silky-white above, beneath pale reddish tomentose, nearly glabrous above with age: fls. similar to the above species but calyx with long silky hairs and sepals more acuminate: pod narrowly linear, about 1/4 in. wide and 2 - 3 1/2 in. long, at maturity densely short-tomentose, 5-8 seeded. Wooded mountain slopes of Yunnan, China.—More beautiful and much more hardy than P. nepalensis, producing an abundance of fls. in April to May in the Middle States.
