Quercus dentata, Thunb. (Q. Daimio, Hort. Q. obovata, Bunge). Tree, to 80 ft., with broad, round-topped head: lvs. short-petioled, obovate, sinuately toothed, with 3-6 rounded broad teeth on each side, dark green and usually glabrous above at length, light green and pubescent beneath, firm and leathery, to 12 in. long: fr. almost sessile; acorn ovate, 1/2-3/4in. long, embraced one-half by the large cup; scales lanceolate, thin, spreading and recurved. Japan, W. China. S.I.F. 1:27. F.E. 14:542 (pl. 29).—Remarkable for its large lvs., on young plants to 1 ft. long and 8 in. broad; hardy N. Var. pinnatifida, Mateum. (Q. pinnatifida, Franch. & Sav.).
