Rhododendron kaempferi, Planch. (R. indicum var. Kaempferi, Maxim.). Fig. 3393. Shrub, to 12 ft.: lvs. membranous, deciduous, broadly elliptic to elliptic-ovate or nearly rhombic, acute at the ends, bright green above, paler beneath, strigose on both sides, with rufous hairs on midrib and petiole, 1 1/4-2 1/2 in. long: fls. 2-4 with or before the lvs.; sepals oval to oblong-ovate, obtuse, long-ciliate, strigose outside; corolla broadly funnelform, 1 1/2-2 in. across, bright orange-red to pink; stamens 5; anthers yellow. April, May. Japan. S.I.F. 2:61. C.L.A. 11:496. M.D.G. 1902:417. S.T.S. 2:113.— Very handsome; hardy in New England.
