Magnolia tripetala, Linn. (M. Umbrella, Lam.). Umbrella Tree. Tree, to 40 ft., with spreading branches, forming an open head: lvs. tapering toward the base, oblong- obovate, acute, pale and pubescent beneath when young, 12-24 in. long: fls. 8-10 in. across, of a disagreeable odor; petals 6-9, oblong-obovate, 4-5 in. long; sepals recurved, light green: fr. rose-colored, ovate- oblong, 2 ½- 4 in. long. May. Pa. to Ala., west to Ark. and Miss. S.S. 1:9, 10. Gn. 22, p. 27; 24, p. 509; 33, p. 539. C.L.A. 5:494.
