Lilium Grayi, Wats. Bulb rhizomatous, similar to that of L. canadense, but smaller: st. 2-4 ft. high, slender, smooth, bare of leaves near the base: leaves horizontal or nearly so, l 1/2 - 3 in. long, l/2 - 3/4 in. wide, usually in 4-8 whorls of 3-8 leaves each, with a few scattered ones above and below: flowers frequently solitary, sometimes 2-6 together, l 1/2-2 in. long, nearly as wide, orange-yellow inside, tipped and tinged dull red and thickly spotted deep purplish brown, outside deep reddish brown; anthers red. Late June, July. Va. and N.C. —Not a showy species, but very graceful and of easy culture. Excellent for both pots and open ground. CH
