Lilium wallacei, Wallace (L. elegans var. Wallacei, Hort.). Bulb cespitose, globular or nearly so, 1-1 1/2 in. diam., composed of a few broad, white scales, often tinged pink or purple: st. 1-2 ft. high, smooth, green, tinged purplish brown: leaves 50-75, horizontal or semi- erect, 1 1/2 - 3 in. long, 1/2 - 1/3 in wide: flowers 1-10, 4-5 in. diam., smooth inside, pale orange-red or apricot, spotted purplish black; anthers red; segms. only slightly, or not at all, clawed at the base. Late July, Aug. Japan. —Thought by some authorities to be a hybrid between L. tigrinum or L. Maximoiwiczii and L. concolor. Easily grown and deserving of more general culture, both for pots and open ground. CH
