Lygeum (Greek, lugoein, to bend). Gramineae. Spikelets 1-fld., 1 ½ -2 in. long, with a hard, curved beak, 2-3 together at the summit of the culms, partially inclosed in a foliaceous sheath: sts. slender, wiry, 2-3 ft., from a hard scaly running rootstock: blades involute, flexuous.—Species 1, L. Spartum, Linn., of arid parts of the Medit. region. This species, together with Stipa tenacissima (which see), forms the "Esparto" of commerce, which comes mostly from Spain and Algeria.
