Mertensia virginica, DC. (M. pulmonarioides, Roth). Virginian Cowslip. Bluebells. Very smooth and glabrous, 1-2 ft.: lvs. obovate or oblong, or the lowest large, rounded and long stalked; veins conspicuous: fls. at length more nodding. Spring. N. Y. and westward to S. C. and Tenn., usually inhabiting low or moist grounds. Var. rubra, Hort., has pink-colored fls.
