Zelkova ulmoides, Schneid. (Z. crenata, Spach. Z. carpinifolia, Koch. Planera Richardii, Michx. Planera carpinifolia, Wats. Planera crenata, Desf. Abelicea ulmoides, Kuntze). Tree, attaining 80 ft., with slender branches forming an oval or oblong head: lvs. oval or ovate to oblong, slightly cordate or rounded at the base, coarsely toothed with obtusish teeth, with 6-8 pairs of veins, usually almost glabrous above at length, pubescent on the veins beneath, 3/4 - 3 in. long. April, May. Caucasus. Gn. 24, p. 371.

Without pruning can have several trunks. Tree has round-head and upright branches. Bark is grey-brown. Branch tips level or rarely weeping. New stems are downy, and leaves are serrated and have conspicuous veins underneath. Flowers give off pleasant scent.
