Featured Flower

Double flowered Impatiens.

Impatiens are likely the number one bedding plant in the United States. These easy to grow plants are usually perennials grown as annuals, though in warm climates they live for years. Part of their popularity is due to the fact that they're easy to grow from seed, bloom quickly, and don't stop until frost kills them. Ripe seed capsules explode upon the slightest touch, shooting little seeds around, earning them the nicknames Snapweed and Touch-me-not.

The pomegranate is a neat, rounded shrub or small tree that can grow to 20 or 30 ft., but more typically to 12 to 16 ft. in height. Dwarf varieties are also known. It is usually deciduous, but in certain areas the leaves will persist on the tree. Younger red-brown bark later becomes gray. The branches are stiff, angular and often spiny. There is a strong tendency to sucker from the base. Pomegranates are also long-lived, but their vigor declines after about 15 years.

Featured Article: Frangipani - Plumeria

Plumeria blooms

Plumeria (common name Frangipani; syn. Himatanthus Willd. ex Roem. & Schult.) is a small genus of 7-8 handsome and useful species native to tropical and subtropical Americas. Open plants have leathery, pointed leaves at the ends of the branches. Flowers during warm seasons, and give clusters of large, showy, waxy flowers with a strong perfume. Plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess poisonous, milky sap, rather similar to that of Euphorbia.

Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar.

About the articles - Articles about gardening should be concise and informative, while articles about plants should present everything a gardener would need to know to grow the plant. The information should always be presented from the gardeners point of view.
