Sorbus alpina, Heynh. (Aronia densiflora, Spach. A. Willdenowii, Zabel. S. Aria x Aronia arbutifolia). Shrub, similar to S. Aria, but lvs. smaller, densely serrulate, with fewer and less straight veins: infl. and fls. smaller; styles 3-4: fr. red or brownish red, 1/4 in. across. Of garden origin.—From Aronia arbutifolia it may be distinguished by usually larger lvs. with more numerous veins and with a less close and less glandular serration and by larger fls. with only 3-4 styles. A similar hybrid is S. Dippelii, Zabel (S. Aria x Aronia melanocarpa) with the lvs. often finally glabrescent and black frs. over 1/3 in. across. CH
