Codlin. Used in England to mean a small, green, half-wild, inferior apple. It is used in distinction to grafted or dessert fruit. It is about equivalent to the American popular use of the word "crab." The word is also used in England as the name of a particular variety or group of varieties, as Keswick Codlin. The word codlin is known in America only in connection with the apple-worm insect, the codlin-moth. Sometimes written Codling. CH
