Read about Gaylussacia ursina in the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Gaylussacia ursina, Torr. & Gray. Shrub, to 6 ft., with somewhat pubescent, spreading branches: lvs. obovate to oblong, acute, membranaceous, 2-4 in. long: fls. white or pinkish: fr. black, shining, sweet. May, June; fr. July, Aug. N. and S. C.—Harlan P. Kelsey writes of this species: "Shrub 2 to 6 feet high; very local in a few counties in southwestern North Carolina, though common in these stations. Locally it is known as 'buckberry,' a name given by the native mountaineers from the fact that deer feed on the very abundant clustered fruit in late summer. The berries are much used for pies and jams, and have a most peculiar and pleasant acid flavor, unlike any other Vaccinium. It promises to be a valuable addition to our garden fruits."
