Pinus sabiniana, Douglas. Digger Pine. Bull Pine. Fig. 2984 (adapted from Pacific R. R. Report). Tree, to 50 or occasionally 80 ft., usually divided into several sts. with short crooked branches, the lower ones pendent, the upper ones ascending, forming a round-topped head : lvs. slender, flexible, pale bluish green, 8-12 in. long: cones pendent on about 2-in. long stalks, oblong - ovate, light red- brown, 6-10 in. long; apophysis pyramidal, sharply keeled, flattened at the straight or incurved apex, the lower scales with much-recurved apex ; seeds 3/4 in. long, short - winged. Calif. S.S. 11: 569. G.C. III. 4:43; 5:45. F. 8.9:964.—Not hardy N. Distinct pine of loose habit and with sparse pale foliage. The seeds are edible.
