Hydrastis canadensis, Linn. Orange Root. Goldenseal. St. 4-10 in. long, from a thick, yellow rootstock: basal lvs. 5-8 in. broad; st.-lvs. 2, lower one petioled, upper sessile and near the small fl.: fr. in ovoid raspberry-like head, the &-12 fleshy carpels tipped with a short, curved beak. April. E. U. S., as far south as Mo. and Ga., in rich woods. B.M. 3019 (in flower); 3232 (in fruit).
