Meratia praecox, Rehd. & Wilson (Calycanthus praecox, Linn. Chimonanthus fragrans, Lindl.). Lvs. elliptic-ovate or oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, bright green, lustrous above, glabrous beneath, 3-5 in. long: fls. very fragrant, 1­1½ in. broad, outer sepals yellow, inner ones striped purplish brown. Feb., March. China. Japan. Var. grandiflora, Rehd. & Wilson (Chimonanthus fragrans var. grandiflora, Lindl.). Fls. much larger and brighter-colored.—The evergreen M. nitens, Rehd. & Wilson (Chimonanthus nitens, Oliver), with long-acuminate lvs. and smaller and paler fls. is not yet introduced.
