Lilium canadense, Linn. (L. penduliflorum, DC. L. pendulum, Spaeth). Meadow Lily. Wild YelLow Lily. Bulb rhizomatous, similar to that of L. superbum, but usually smaller: st. 2-5 ft. high, smooth, slender, bare of leaves for 6-8 in. above the surface: leaves horizontal, 2-4 in. long,1/3 - 3/4 in. wide, usually in 4-8 whorls of 4-10 leaves each, with a few scattered ones above and below: flowers 1-10, 2-3 in. long and as wide, bright orange- yellow spotted purplish brown; anthers red. Late June to early Aug. New Bruns. to Ont., Minn.. Mo., Ga. and Ala. — Our commonest native species; although not so handsome or showy as L. superbum which it resembles in habit of growth, or L. philadelphicum, it is more graceful than either and is well worthy of culture Var. flavum, Kunth (var. luteum, Hort.), produces lemon-yellow flowers spotted purplish brown. Var. coccineum, Kunth (var. rubrum, Hort.). produces larger flowers of a bright orange-red, spotted purplish brown and heavily tinged deeper red on the outside. CH
