One ft. high, simple: basal Lvs. 3-5- lobed, with rounded outline, followed later by deeply cut Lvs.; involucre sessile, several in. below the solitary fl.: fls. vivid scarlet, 2 in. across; stamens black. May, June. France. — Sometimes called a variety of A. hortensis, Linn., from which it may have descended. Several garden forms, as A. annuàta-grandiflöra, A. multipétala, and Southern Star.
