Stachys grandiflora, Benth. (Betonica rosea, Hort. B. spicata, Hort. B. grandiflora, Willd.). A hardy perennial about 1 ft. high: lower lvs. broadly ovate, obtuse-crenate, long-petioled, base broadly heart-shaped; the upper gradually smaller, nearly similar and sessile, the uppermost bract-like: fls. violet, large and showy, the curving tube about 1 in. long and 3 or 4 times surpassing the calyx, in 2-3 distinct whorls of 10-20 fls. each. Asia Minor, etc. Var. robusta, Hort. (Betonica grandiflora robusta, Hort. B. spicata robusta, Hort.), is said to have tufts of corrugated lvs., to grow 18 in. high and spikes 3 in. long of rosy pink fls. Var. superba, Hort. (Betonica grandiflora superba, Hort. B. superba, Hort.), is said to have showy spikes of intense mauve or a rich shade of purple-violet fls. There is a white variant of this known in the trade as Betonica superba alba. CH
