Avena sterilis, Linn. Animated Oats. Resembles A. fatua but the spikelets larger, the glumes about 1½ in.; awns 2-3 in.—Occasionally cult. as a curiosity, the florets when moistened presenting spontaneous movements due to the twisting and untwisting of the awns as they absorb or give off moisture.
