Eucalyptus cornuta, Labill. Yate Tree. Moderate-sized or large tree, usually low-branched and spreading: bark either deciduous in irregular sheets or persistent and rough: lvs. oblong or broad-lanceolate, often obtuse, 2-5 in. long: fls. greenish yellow, numerous, in dense heads; lid cylindric, horn-like, 1-1½ in. long; stamens 1½-2 in. long: fr. short-cylindric, 4-5 lines wide; valves much exserted and connivent into a beak-like projection. June-Oct. F.v.M. Eucal. 9:1. B.M. 6140 (lid too highly colored).—Used successfully as a roadside tree in S. Calif.: especially good as a shade tree: adapted to the lemon belt, and tolerating alkaline and saline soils (Franceschi). Timber hard, heavy, tough, and elastic. CH
