Doronicum plantagineum, Linn. Glabrous, but woolly at the neck, with long, silky hairs: root lvs. ovate or oval, wavy-toothed; st.-lvs. nearly entire, the lower ones narrowed into a petiole and not eared, the upper ones sessile, oblong, acuminate: rhizome tuberous, roundish, or creeping obliquely: stalk of the root-lvs. about 3 in. long: typically about 2 ft. high. Sandy woods of Eu. G.C. III. 17:229. J.H. III. 55:109. Gn. 60:151. Var. excelsum, Hort. (D. excelsum, Hort. D. "Harpur Crew," Hort.), is more robust, grows about 5 ft. high and is probably more cult, than any other kind of doronicum. Fls. sometimes 4 in. across. Gn. 47, p. 269; 28:512; 38:437. G.C.
