Larix decidua, Mill. (L. europaea, DC. L. Larix, Kars- ten). European Larch. Tree, to 100 ft., with pyramidal, later often irregular, head: bark dark grayish brown: branchlets slender, glabrous, yellowish: leaves compressed, triangular, soft and obtuse, bright green, 3/4 - 1 1/4 in. long: pistillate flowers purplish: cones 3/4 - 1 1/2 in.long, with many almost orbicular scales, usually puberulous, or glabrous on the back, loosely appressed at maturity. N. and Cent. Eu. L. Var. pendula, Koch (L. europaea Var. pendula, Lawson. L. americana var. pendula, Loud.). With pendulous branches; sometimes confounded with the American larch. L. Var. fastigiata, Koch (L. europaea var. fastigiata. Beissn.). Of columnar habit. L. Var. virgata, Hayek (L. europaea var. virgata Hempel & Wilhelm). Branches long and tortuous, very sparingly branched. A hybrid of this and the preceding species has been received from Dunkeld, Scotland, and is now growing at the Arnold Arboretum. It is of vigorous growth, but has not yet produced cones. CH
