Larix leptolepis, Murr. (L. Kaempferi, Sarg., not Carr. L. japonica, Carr.). Tree, to 80 ft., with horizontal branches, forming a pyramidal head: branchlets yellowish or reddish brown, glabrous and glossy; spurs short and globular: leaves rather broad, obtuse, soft, 1/2 - 1 /1/2 in., light or bluish green: cones ovate-oblong, 1/2 - 1 1/2 in. long, with emarginate, roundish ovate scales. Japan. The handsomest of the larches as a lawn tree. Larix Var. minor, Murr. (Larix Var. Murrayana, Maxim. L. japonica, Murr.,not Carr.). Dwarfer form with smaller cones. Larix Var. prostrata, Beissn., a prostrate form. CH
