Leucothoe recurva, Gray. Similar to the last; but lower and more spreading: leaves elliptic-ovate to elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate: racemes spreading and recurved; anthers with 2 awns: caps, depressed and strongly lobed. April-June. Va. to Ala. —It grows in drier situations; the foliage of this and the preceding species assumes a splendid scarlet color in fall. CH
