Macroplectrum (Greek, long-spurred). Orchidaceae. Caulescent plants, in habit and cultural requirements like Vanda, with numerous distichous leaves, the flowers with long spurs. Sepals and petals similar, spreading; lip rigidly attached to the base of the column, entire; column short and thick; pollinia 2, upon separate and distinct membranous caudicles.—Several species in Madagascar and the Mascarine Isls. In. M. sesquipedale, the long spur or tail-like appendage is sometimes 18 in. long. Darwin predicted when he saw the plant first that a moth would be found some day in Madagascar with a tongue long enough to reach down to the nectar, and it was, years afterward.
