Malacocarpus (Greek, soft and fruit). Cactaceae. A genus commonly combined with Echinocactus. As usually understood, it consists of globose plants: fls. slightly funnel-shape, usually yellow; ovary with scales bearing in their axils bristles and wool; stigmalobes red: fr. soft, rose-colored or crimson. Six species have been assigned to this genus; but if it is to be retained, more species are doubtless to be referred to it. It is native of the east coast of S. Amer. M. Sellowii, Schum., is offered in the European trade under the name of Echinocactus Sellowii. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
