Nuphar advena, Smith. Common Spatter-dock. Cow Lily. Fig. 2536. Lvs. large (about 1 ft. long), varying from roundish to ovate or almost oblong, thick, with a deep and mostly open basal sinus, the lower surface often pubescent; petioles terete; submerged Lvs. usually wanting: fls. 2-3 in. across, more or less globular (not wide opening), yellow, mostly tinged with green or brown; petals shorter than the stamens, fleshy and truncate; sepals 6; stigma nearly entire, yellow or pale red, 12-24-rayed. N. Y., southward and westward. Mn. 1:17. G.C. II. 20:557. V.2:197. Var. variegatum, Engelm., with floating Lvs. only (none erect), closed sinus, petioles flat on one side and fls. partly purple, occurs from New Bruns. to Brit. Col., Iowa, N. Ohio, and the mountains of Pa.
