Pfaffia (C. H. Piaff, 1774-1852, German chemist). Amarantaceae. Slender perennial herbs from Trop. and extra-Trop. S. Amer., tomentose or villous, rarely gla-brate: lvs. opposite, sessile or nearly so, entire: heads or spikes densely fld.; bracts and bractlets transparent: fls. usually in solitary long-peduncled heads, bracteate and with 2 bractlets; perianth 5-parted; staminal tube long, 5-cut to the middle, the anther-bearing teeth ciliate at the margin; stigma discoid or head-like, entire or 2-lobed.—Species about 20, one of which is known more or less in gardens, although it is not certain whether the plants that have been in the trade are properly named.
