Phellodendron japonicum, Maxim. Tree, to 30 ft., with slightly fissured dark brown bark, not corky: 1-year-old branches reddish brown: lf.-rachis densely villous or tomentose; lfts. 9-13, ovate to ovate-oblong, acuminate, truncate or subcordate and very unequal at the base, minutely crenulate and ciliate, dull green above, villous beneath all over, more densely on the veins, 3—4 in. long: infl. hoary-tomentose : fr. black, nearly 1/2in. thick, in broad panicles 2-3 1/2 in. across. June. Cent. Japan. S.T.S. 1:95. CH
