Pinus balfouriana, Jeffrey. Foxtail Pine. Tree, to 40, occasionally 90 ft., narrow-pyramidal when young, irregular and open in old age: branchlets dark brown, puberulous at first: lvs. crowded, incurved and pressed against the branches, rigid, acute, dark green on the back, with conspicuous white lines inside, 1-1 1/2 in. long, remaining for 10-12 years on the branches: cones pendulous, subcylindric, dark purplish brown, 3 1/2 - 5 in. long; apophysis flattened, the concave oblong umbo with minute incurved prickle; seed 1/3 in. long.
