Ptaeroxylon (Greek, sneeze-wood, so called because the wood causes sneezing). Meliaceae. Small tree or shrub with bitter bark, whose wood has a commercial value. Leaves odd-pinnate; lfts. unequal-sided, 5-8 pairs: infl. axillary, panicled racemes crowded at the ends of the branches; fls. polygamous-dioecious, small, white or yellowish; sepals 4, short, obtuse; petals 4; disk hypogynous, glandular; stamens 4, alternate with the petals; ovary obcordate, 2-celled, ovules solitary: fr. a compressed, 2-celled, 2-seeded caps., bi-lobed at the apex and cordate at base.—One species in S.
